Shawarma has always been one of my favorite wraps to binge on. For the Shawarma virgins, Shawarma (Arabic: شاورما / ALA-LC: shāwarmā;) is a Levantine Arab meat preparation, where lamb, chicken, turkey, beef, veal, carabeef, or mixed meats are placed on a spit , and may be grilled for as long as a day. Shavings are cut off the block of meat for serving, and the remainder of the block of meat is kept heated on the rotating spit. Shawarma can be served on a plate (generally with accompaniments), or as a sandwich or wrap.
When I was told that Reno has its very own Shawarma joint, that was it, Shawarmageddon was my next place on the list.
Located on Ralston Street, this joint is locally owned. When asked why “Shawarmageddon”, the owner simply said ” I love metal and I love Shawarma.” This place is literally a hole in the wall and may even go unnoticed by passersby. It has quite the creative touch to it, but might get a little stuffy if too many people walked in at once. I would say take-out would be the best option if you aren’t looking at just eating and skedaddling.
The Food: Their Shawarma wrap comes with a choice of Lamb, Chicken or Falafel and 6 sauces to choose from: Zhug, Charif, Harissa, Labneh, Toum and Hummus. All the sauces but Labneh are vegan. You get to choose 3 sauces with an extra charge of 50¢ for every extra sauce. Lamb is the favorite choice of meat.
I tried the chicken Shawarma wrap with Toum, Labneh and Hummus and all the veggies. The flavors were just right and the chicken was juicy and cooked to perfection. I would definitely recommend giving it a go. And to satisfy your sweet tooth they offer Luqaimat, Arabic fried donuts with an orange bliss dip which is definitely a must try!
The overall experience was good. They have uber-friendly staff, who go the extra mile to make customers happy.

And as promised in my previous blog Reno, The Biggest Little City In The World, here is a video recipe of how they make their Shawarma wrap, which takes longer than it looks if you actually try making it.
Bon appetit!

Thank you for writing about my favorite meal. I like Shawarma because it is simply delicious and healthy. Shawarma is very popular in Saudi Arabia so I am used to it but I couldn’t find it here in Reno. It is also popular in the bay area and big cities here in the US. I’m happy to know about this place and I will be checking it out soon.
